The Australian Reading Association (ARA) was founded in 1975 during the first Australian Reading Conference held in Adelaide. In 1995 the Association's name was changed to the Australian Literacy Educators' Association (ALEA). A short history of ALEA was published by the Association in 2008. Since its inception, a national council comprising the President, up to two Vice Presidents, a Publications Director and eight State and Territory Directors has managed the Association's affairs. The organisation has a permanent Head Office in Adelaide, South Australia, staffed by a Secretary / Business Manager and an Administrative Officer.

ALEA sees itself as providing a major advocacy role in relation to significant literacy issues; it supports its members in their ongoing learning; provides access to the latest classroom practice and literacy research; and helps to build effective literacy communities.

ALEA regularly publishes high ranking journals, develops and produces a range of stimulating literacy resources, and facilitates professional sharing and learning opportunities through their many active and highly effective Local Councils throughout Australia.
