Over 250 Teachers at ALEA (SA) Writing Workshop1st Dec 13
Over 250 teachers devoted Saturday 9 November 2013 to professional learning about writing. ALEA (SA) hosted Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey, authors of The Writing Book, to run a workshop at The Fogolar Fulan Centre, Felixstow, SA. Teachers came from as far away as Kangaroo Island, the Murray Lands and Yorke Peninsula to acquire knowledge about Developing an Effective Writing Program. Participants gained an understanding of the key principles of a balanced, effective writing program whilst exploring the features of both long and short writing lessons. They had the opportunity to try out several strategies such as think-pair-share and quick writes.
Sheena and Louise illustrated their workshop with samples of students’ work, photos of classroom environments (name, frame, explain) and videos of classroom lessons. They also stressed the importance of purposeful writing. Students need to know (1) why they are writing, and (2) who they are writing for. The writers’ toolkit includes (1) knowledge about writing, and (2) skills, and these are developed throughout the schooling process. Participants appreciated the presenters’ practical approaches and were able to take away ideas to implement easily into their classrooms. Copies of The Writing Book, a useful adjunct to the workshop, sold out quickly but further copies are available from ALEA.
