Evaluative Language for classroom teachers and Heads of Curriculum

One of the threads of the Australian Curriculum English - Language strand is called Evaluative Language. This system of language is used to express opinions, engage in dialogue about a topic, and make evaluative judgments about people, places, things and texts. The teaching of Evaluative Language or the Resources of Appraisal as they commonly known is required from Years 1-10. Understanding of these resources can contribute to improved comprehension skills in students and the ability to use them in writing can contribute to effective performance in the NAPLAN Writing Task, narrative writing and texts such as reviews, biographies, expositions etc. This highly practical full day workshop introduces teachers to this set of language resources and provides ideas for the teaching of them in the classroom. Explicit links will be made to the Australian Curriculum and to some Curriculum to the Classroom texts.
Annette is well known in Darling Downs education circles. She was Head of Department, English, for many years at Harristown State High School, Literacy Project Presenter 2008-2010 and more recently since retirement, presenter on all things English and Literacy in Toowoomba, Darling Downs, Brisbane and surrounding areas. Her understanding of, and practical approach to grammar, text types and the English language in general, has been appreciated by hundreds of classroom teachers.
