Literacy Heaven - Literacy & Poverty - 16 Feb 2012

ALEA MACKAY
ALEA Mackay presents a series of 'Literacy Heaven' workshops on Thursdays in weeks 4 and 7 of each term throughout 2012. Each workshop focuses on a contemporary issue in literacy.

'Literacy Heaven' - Literacy and Poverty
SPEAKER: Grant Webb

Poverty needs to be seen as one of many social justice/equity issues that are barriers to students' engagement and success and needs to be embedded in a social justice framework. HOWEVER... while language and race are important predicators of student outcomes, there is strong empirical evidence that socio-economic status remains the single most powerful predictor not just of education but of all life outcomes. Poverty is one aspect of low social capital. Language and race are other indicators of low social capital. When poverty, language and race intersect, communities become distressed. This workshop will look at what schools in Canada are doing to reduce the stresses of communities and also explore Ruby Payne's: A Framework for Understanding Poverty.
