NAPLAN Marking Demystified
PRESENTER: Susan Hoy, NAPLAN Marker.
With Annette Curnow, Literacy Consultant and Helen Casey, Principal Project Officer (English)

Susan Hoy- Deputy Principal at Toowoomba State High School, Wilsonton Campus was a NAPLaN Marker in 2011. In this presentation Susan will explore aspects of the marking of the NAPLAN writing task. How do the criteria translate into what a marker must score highly or poorly? What small secrets can teachers share with their students to make the biggest difference to their results? Susan will explore the strengths and weaknesses of student scripts, as well as providing a personal reflection of being a marker.

Annette Curnow – Writing Better Sentences
Annette is well known in Darling Downs education circles. She was Head of Department, English, for many years at Harristown State High School; more recently she has worked as a presenter on all things English and Literacy across the Darling Downs and around the state. In this presentation, Annette will provide practical ideas for classroom teachers to improve their students’ ability to write a variety of sentences for best effect in persuasive texts.

Helen Casey – Reading NAPLaN Texts
Helen is currently Principal Project Officer (English) with Department of Education and Training and a former high school English teacher. In response to the regional reading data, Helen will present deconstruct NAPLAN Reading texts, explore questions that were problematic for many students and focus on ways that teachers might address student need with targeted reading strategies.
