Imagine a City

Imagine a City

Hurst, Elise. (2014)
Omnibus Books for Scholastic Australia

This beautiful picture book, written and illustrated by Elise Hurst takes the reader on a magical journey to a city of impossibilities and wonders. It is a text, which will be revisited many times by its readers from ages three to adulthood, as it reveals new wonders at each reading.

Imagine a train to take you away

Imagine a city and drops of rain

A world without edges

Where the wind takes you high

The superb black and white illustrations, hatched and cross-hatched and with a whimsical, fanciful feel, give a sense of treasured books of old, as does the red cover with its embossed title. Imagine a City is imagination set free and allowed to explore. It is balanced with a beautiful rhyming text in which a mother and her two children take a fantastic journey together.

This is a book that will inspire children to write fantasy. Teachers could use just one page, any page, of illustration to explore myriad ideas for fantasy writing. There are also many connections to other texts contained in the illustrations – the white rabbit, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland and flying books. It is a book which will keep children and adults alike engaged for hours and which will grow richer and become more treasured with each reading. Superb!
